Make Your Email Work Harder for Your Business

We all use email every day. Social media might grab the spotlight, but email is the steady, reliable workhorse quietly keeping business moving. If you run a small business, it’s worth making sure this everyday tool is actually working for you—not against you.

One of the simplest ways to do that? Pay attention to how you show up in someone’s inbox. Here are two common pitfalls I see all the time:

1. A confusing or unprofessional “from” line.
Most people obsess over subject lines, but the “from” line is just as important—maybe even more. It’s the first clue to the recipient about who you are. If they recognize the name, they’re likely to open your email right away. If they don’t, your message might get deleted without a second thought.

Just yesterday, I got an email from “Gabbi” with no subject line. I almost deleted it before I realized it was from Gabriella, a customer service rep I work with. How many of her emails get missed because her “from” line isn’t clear?

Make it easy for people. Use something like First Name Last Name | Company Name so they immediately know who you are and how they know you.

2. Not using a custom domain for your email.
If you own a domain (like www.mycompany.com), you can create email addresses that use it—name@mycompany.com—often at no extra cost. Yet I still see businesses using addresses like companyname@gmail.com or Yahoo, Comcast, and other providers.

The problem? It can make you look less established, and it’s a missed marketing opportunity. Every time you send an email from your custom domain, you’re reminding people of your business name and your website address.

Like any tool, email is only as effective as the way you use it. A few small tweaks can make you look more professional, build trust, and help more of your messages get opened.
