Taking Charge of Your Workday (So It Doesn’t Take Charge of You)

The other day, I was chatting with a friend about the beautiful chaos of running a business, raising a family, and still somehow staying sane. We swapped stories about juggling it all—and one thing was clear: if we didn’t manage our schedules, they’d manage us.

So, let’s talk about how to stay in charge of your time without sacrificing your sanity (or your weekends). These are a few of my favorite ways to keep things running smoothly without burning out:

1. Set Your Own Hours (and Stick to Them)
Just because a client emails you at 8 PM doesn’t mean you need to reply right then and there. Your time is yours to manage. I’m always grateful when a client is thinking ahead and getting things into my inbox—but that doesn’t mean I’m clocking in at bedtime.

I work during the hours that suit my life, and I encourage you to do the same. Boundaries are not only healthy—they’re necessary.

2. Use Tech to Work Smarter
Sometimes I do get the itch to knock out a few emails at night or over the weekend. But thanks to email scheduling tools (like the one in Gmail), I can write my reply now and send it later—say, 9 AM Monday.

This lets me work when I’m in the zone, without sending mixed signals about when I’m actually available. It’s productivity with a little stealth mode thrown in.

3. Manage Expectations from the Start
With every new client, I make it clear when I’m usually at my desk (between 9 and 6), and that I reply to emails within 24 hours. I also let them know I keep an eye out for true emergencies—but that I’m not glued to my inbox 24/7.

By setting expectations early, I avoid misunderstandings and create space to live a full, balanced life outside of work.

The result? Clients know when they’ll hear from me, and I get to enjoy time with family, friends, and, let’s be honest—myself. You don’t have to hustle 24/7 to run a successful business. You just have to run it on your own terms.
